On March 1, 2020, Copper Canyon Fire and Medical District, along with the Verde Valley Fire District responded to 3950 East Yuma Drive for the report of a structure fire with an unconscious person inside. Crews arrived on scene to find a small residential duplex type structure with no smoke or fire showing. The occupant of the home along with family members were standing outside and stated that her son was still inside the home.
Crews made access to the home to find smoke and high heat. Crews encountered a male victim who was unconscious several feet inside the front door. Crews quickly extricated the victim to the exterior of the home, where he was treated until EMS crews arrived on scene. Once additional emergency crews arrived on scene, the smoldering type fire was quickly extinguished. Fire damage did not extend to the adjacent apartment. The victim was airlifted to a local burn center for treatment of his injuries. One additional victim was treated and released on scene for smoke inhalation. This incident is still under investigation.
