Volunteers In Protection is a community organization that functions under the auspices of the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office. VIPs attend a training academy for several weeks before being sworn as VIPs. Patrol VIPs must attend an additional firearms course and qualify under the same requirements as certified deputies. VIPs who attend the full academy but not the firearms course may be unarmed patrol and assist when full patrol status is not required, such as in traffic control situations. They may also ride along with other VIPs or certified deputies. Administrative VIPs attend a shortened version of the academy and assist with numerous tasks in the various offices, including the detention centers.
